NiMet Forecasts Nationwide Thunderstorms, Rainfall From Monday to Wednesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

In a weather outlook released on Sunday, July 20, NiMet warned of moderate to heavy rainfall, cloudy skies, and thunderstorms affecting the northern, central, and southern regions over the three-day period.

Monday Forecast:

Thunderstorms and rain are expected on Monday morning in Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states, while the rest of the northern region will remain partly sunny with cloudy intervals.

In the afternoon and evening, more thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are likely in Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Yobe.

Central states like Niger may see light rain and thunderstorms in the morning, with rain expected later in Plateau, Nasarawa, the FCT, Kogi, Benue, and Niger.

The southern states will begin the day with cloudy skies, while Imo, Abia, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom may experience light rainfall later in the day.

Tuesday Forecast:

Northern Nigeria will have sunny skies with cloud patches in the morning, and moderate rainfall is expected in Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Jigawa. Thunderstorms are forecast later in Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna.

In the central region, Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa are likely to experience morning showers, while thunderstorms and rain will spread to Niger, FCT, and Nasarawa in the afternoon and evening.

Morning cloudiness will continue in southern areas like Akwa Ibom and Cross River, with moderate rainfall predicted later in Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa.

Wednesday Forecast:

Sunny skies with cloud patches are expected over northern Nigeria, with morning rain in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba. By afternoon, thunderstorms are forecast in Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kebbi.

The central region will see moderate rain in the afternoon across FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara.

In the south, early morning rain is expected in Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, followed by heavier showers in Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom later in the day.

Public Advisory:

NiMet advised the public to take precautions against possible hazards such as strong winds that may precede thunderstorms. Loose outdoor items should be secured, and driving during heavy rainfall should be avoided. Residents are also urged to unplug electrical appliances and avoid standing near tall trees.
