The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday through Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency warned of moderate to heavy rains in several regions, with flash floods likely in some northern states.
Monday Forecast
Isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected on Monday morning over Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are forecast across much of the north, with possible flash floods in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.
In the central region, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are expected in the morning, with moderate rainfall over Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the FCT, and Benue. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains will spread across most parts of the region.
For the south, cloudy conditions are anticipated in the morning with moderate rains over Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. Rains are likely to intensify across the region later in the day.
Tuesday Forecast
The north will experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms over Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba.
The central region will see cloudy skies in the morning with rains in Kogi, Niger, the FCT, Kwara, and Nasarawa. Thunderstorms with moderate rains will follow later in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the FCT.
In the south, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta will see cloudy skies with moderate rains in the morning. Light to moderate rains will extend across most parts of the region in the afternoon and evening.
Wednesday Forecast
Cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are expected over the north in the morning, with light rain in Sokoto and Zamfara. By afternoon and evening, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast for Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto.
In the central region, cloudy skies with light rains are likely in the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger in the morning. Later, thunderstorms with moderate rains will affect Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger.
Across the southern region, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, with moderate rains anticipated later in the day.
Public Advisory
NiMet urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall and cautioned farmers against applying fertilisers or pesticides before rainfall to prevent nutrient loss.
Residents were advised to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees during storms. Airline operators were also reminded to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe planning.
