The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted heavy thundery and rainy weather conditions across the country from Monday through Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency projected thunderstorms with moderate rainfall on Monday morning across parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe, Borno, and Yobe States in the North, with more thunderstorms expected later in the day over Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Adamawa, Taraba, and Borno.
For the central region, light morning rains are anticipated in Plateau and Niger States, followed by widespread thunderstorms in Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Plateau, Kogi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by afternoon and evening.
In the South, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with light rain in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, while later in the day, light to moderate rains will affect Abia, Edo, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa States.
On Tuesday, thunderstorms are forecast in the morning over Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Borno, Yobe, and Kebbi, with further activity later in Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, and Zamfara.
The central region will witness cloudy skies with light rains in Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, and the FCT, before widespread thunderstorms set in.
The southern states are also expected to experience moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening, spreading across Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
By Wednesday, NiMet projects cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the North, accompanied by morning rains over Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kaduna, with thunderstorms expected across most of the region later in the day.
The central region will see light morning rains in Niger, Kwara, and the FCT, followed by thunderstorms in FCT, Plateau, Kogi, Benue, Niger, and Nasarawa. The southern region is forecast to experience moderate rainfall throughout the day.
NiMet urged Nigerians to take precautions during the period, including avoiding driving under heavy rain, wearing warm clothing during cold nights, securing loose objects, and staying away from tall trees during storms.
Farmers were advised not to apply fertilizers or pesticides before rainfall, while airline operators were directed to seek airport-specific weather reports for safe flight operations.
