The Federal Government has described the re-entry into Ogoniland as a historic milestone that goes beyond oil production, stressing it represents justice, healing, and inclusive development.
Speaking at the presentation of the Ogoni Consultations Report on Wednesday in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the move demonstrates the government’s recognition of the sacrifices endured by the Ogoni people.
“We are not, as a government, taking lightly the years of pain endured in Ogoniland. We declare with conviction that hope is here and is back with us,” Tinubu said.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, in a statement signed by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh, described the re-entry as a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to the Ogoni people and a step toward national prosperity.
“This journey cannot be driven solely by production volumes. It must be anchored on justice, equity, sustainability, and collaboration with the people whose land bears this wealth,” Ojulari said, adding that NNPC has already commenced road construction, infrastructure upgrades, and empowerment programmes in the area.
Ojulari commended the role of National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Presidential Committee led by Prof. Don Baridam for fostering dialogue that made the breakthrough possible.
Ribadu described the process as transparent and inclusive, while Baridam praised Tinubu’s commitment to the Ogoni people, noting that trust was restored through dialogue and diplomacy.
Officials say the re-entry also carries global significance, showcasing Nigeria’s effort to reconcile energy development with environmental protection and community inclusion.
