The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT), Nigeria Chapter, has urged the Federal Government to strengthen human rights protection, justice and accountability following Nigeria’s reported election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term.
The commission described the development as an opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate a stronger commitment to upholding fundamental human rights, promoting the rule of law and protecting human dignity.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Country Director of IHRC-RFT, Nigeria Chapter, Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, called on the Federal Government to translate the international recognition into concrete actions that would improve human rights protection across the country.
He urged the government to address human rights violations, strengthen the rule of law, protect vulnerable communities, and ensure equal protection for all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or social status.
“Membership of the UN Human Rights Council should be more than diplomatic recognition; it must inspire measurable progress in protecting the fundamental rights and dignity of every Nigerian,” Amb. Adamu said.
He stressed that Nigeria’s membership should spur greater accountability and practical reforms that would guarantee citizens’ rights and freedoms.
The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with government institutions and other stakeholders to advance human rights, justice and accountability across the country.
IHRC-RFT, which holds United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Special Consultative Status, said it remained committed to promoting respect for human rights and ensuring that the dignity of every Nigerian was protected.
