Nigerian Singer, Onyeka Onwenu, Dies @ 72

On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, after performing at Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration, the seasoned performer allegedly fell apart.

Onyeka Onwenu, a 72-year-old veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, passed away.

She collapsed after a performance at Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, according to Niche newspaper.

She was flown to Lagos’s Reddington Hospital. Regretfully, she was unable to attend.

“It is very sad,” stated an eyewitness at the party who told the newspaper that the horrible occurrence had occurred. After playing at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration today, Onyeka Onwenu slumped. After being brought to Reddington Hospital, she was unable to arrive.”

“I have never seen anything like this before,” stated another witness. She had just come down from the stage after performing energetically and admirably as always. And she went to her seat, where she slumped. It is still like a dream.”

Born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, Nigeria, Onwenu started her career as a singer and quickly rose to prominence with her distinctive voice and meaningful lyrics. Her music often addressed social issues and was known as the “Elegant Stallion” for her grace.

She was also a gifted actress who exhibited her depth and flexibility in several Nollywood productions. In addition to her career in entertainment, Onwenu was a politician and journalist.

She also held the position of chair of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.

She became a well-known figure in Nigeria and worldwide thanks to her contributions to the music and film industries and her support of social justice and women’s rights.

Loved by many in the Nigerian entertainment business, Onwenu was well-known for her powerful acting career and musical prowess.
