The Nigerian Navy has concluded plans to establish a naval base in Yauri, located in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as part of its broader efforts to enhance maritime security across Nigeria’s inland waterways.
The announcement was made by a delegation from the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
Leading the delegation, Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu explained that the initiative aligns with the Navy’s strategic mission to expand its security operations beyond coastal waters and reinforce its presence along inland waterways, especially the River Niger.
“River Niger is a critical national asset that contributes significantly to agriculture, power generation, and the livelihood of many Nigerians.
“However, due to ongoing insurgencies and security challenges, the river has also become a conduit for criminal activities, including arms smuggling and other threats to national security,” Nwatu noted.
He said that while the Navy already operates a base in Niger State along the River Niger, the extension to Kebbi is necessary to ensure full control and monitoring of the strategic waterway.
“The river has become a convergence point for criminal elements. Expanding our presence to Yauri will allow us to secure the area more effectively and deter illicit activities,” he added.
Rear Admiral Nwatu expressed confidence that with the support of the Kebbi State Government and local communities, the new base would enhance regional and national security, particularly in the North-West.
Governor Nasir Idris welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely and holistic development in light of the security challenges facing southern Kebbi.
“This is the first time Kebbi will have a naval base, and we are truly grateful to the Chief of the Naval Staff for considering Yauri,” Governor Idris said.
“Given that Kebbi shares borders with Niger and Benin Republics, and considering the recent incursion of criminal elements such as the Lakurawa group, this additional layer of security is not only strategic but necessary.”
He highlighted the current limitations of marine police in the area, noting their insufficient numbers and capacity to secure the vast stretch of the River Niger effectively.
Governor Idris assured the Navy delegation of the state government’s full support, including provision of temporary accommodation for personnel and assistance in acquiring land for a permanent site.
“This move by the Nigerian Navy is in the best interest of our people, and we will do everything within our capacity to support its success,” Governor Idris concluded.
The new naval base is expected to significantly boost security in the North-West region and protect Nigeria’s inland maritime assets.
