Nigeria Struggles After A Bright Start Against Rwanda, Firing Blanks

Stephen Enoch

Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Amavubi at Amahoro Stadium marked the Super Eagles’ first point loss in the 2025 Afcon qualifiers.
Nigeria failed to find the goal against the hosts in this Group D match in Kigali, resulting in a scoreless result.

Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho were unutilized substitutes for Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles’ interim coach.

Similar to his performance against Benin the previous week, Victor Osimhen began the game on the bench and was unable to find the back of the net.

Nigeria failed to score as Ademola Lookman, who had two goals against the Cheetahs, was unable to score either.

Fiacre Ntwari, the goalie for Kaizer Chiefs, was the one representing Rwanda, whereas Stanley Ntwari of Chippa was in action for Nigeria. They both kept a clean sheet.

Even though Rwanda is a more favored opponent than the Super Eagles, Amavubi was the day’s largest defeat.

Rwanda was unable to secure their first set of maximum points in these qualifiers, having begun their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Libya.
Nigeria lost by a point in these qualifiers for the first time, having defeated Benin 3-0 to open the round.

With four points in Group D at this point, the Super Eagles are under pressure to win their next two games against Libya in October in order to maintain their safety.

Rwanda has two points in this pool and has not yet experienced victory.

In October, the Super Eagles will play two matches in a row against Libya to resume the Afcon qualifications.

Rwanda will play Benin both at home and away during the same international session.
