The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has introduced new guidelines linking upkeep loan disbursements directly to the academic calendars of institutions.
In a statement on Thursday, August 21, 2025, NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, explained that students will only be eligible for upkeep loans during their current academic session.
Disbursements will automatically end once the institution’s academic year concludes, and students will need to reapply at the start of each new session to access both tuition and upkeep loans.
To support this adjustment, the NELFUND loan portal is being automated to display only upkeep loans collected by students in each academic session.
Institutions have also been directed to promptly upload their academic calendars to ensure students access their full entitlements.
Oluwatuyi emphasized that the directive is aimed at promoting transparency and efficiency in student loan management.
“NELFUND remains committed to providing accessible and accountable loan support to Nigerian students and seeks the cooperation of all stakeholders in its smooth implementation,” she said.
