Close to 300 people have been killed in a surge of violence in Sudan’s North Kordofan state, where the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have reportedly launched a series of brutal attacks on villages near the city of Bara.

According to Emergency Lawyers, a Sudanese human rights group, the RSF began coordinated assaults over the weekend, targeting communities surrounding Bara, a city currently under its control.

In the village of Shag Alnom alone, more than 200 people were reportedly killed—many shot or burned alive during arson attacks.

The violence continued in neighboring villages, where 38 more civilians were killed during looting raids.

On Sunday, the RSF allegedly stormed the village of Hilat Hamid, killing at least 46 people, including children and pregnant women.

Dozens remain missing, raising fears that the death toll could rise.

North Kordofan has become a key front in Sudan’s civil war, which erupted in April 2023 between the RSF and the national army.

The conflict has devastated communities nationwide and triggered one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

Since the war began, tens of thousands have been killed and over 13 million displaced, according to aid agencies.

Human rights groups and humanitarian organizations are calling for urgent international intervention to stop the violence.

Without swift action, they warn, civilians will continue to suffer amid growing atrocities and worsening instability.
