Nasarawa Threatens To Shut Mining Firms Over Negligence In Community Responsibility

Editor

Nasarawa State Government has issued a strong warning to mining companies neglecting their community social responsibilities, stating that such firms risk being shut down if they fail to comply.

Princess Margaret Itake Elayo, the Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, issued the warning during a visit to mining sites in Karu Local Government Area of the State to inspect water quality.

She expressed disapproval of the use of mercury in mining processes due to its harmful effects on both human and animal health.

Her concerns were heightened by reports of mercury contamination in River Uke, which is reportedly consumed by local communities and wildlife.

The visit specifically targeted the mining operations along the banks of Uke River, where it has been alleged that miners are utilizing mercury chemicals for processing.

The contaminated water is believed to be flowing back into the river, which is a vital resource for domestic use and sustenance for local fauna.

Ms. Elayo and her team took water samples for testing and invited key representatives from the mining sector to respond to these serious allegations.

“As a government, we have a responsibility to protect life and property. My ministry is committed to preserving our ecosystem.

“If these harmful practices are indeed taking place, you must cease immediately. The health of our people is paramount, surpassing any profits made here,” she declared.

Furthermore, the commissioner stressed the importance of fulfilling corporate social responsibilities, urging mining companies to invest in their host communities by constructing schools, building medical facilities, and providing scholarships.

She made it explicitly clear that failure to comply would result in the closure of their operations until necessary actions are taken.

Following her inspection of the mining sites, Princess Margaret and her team also visited Saka in Karu to assess the alarming threat of gully erosion impacting the local population.
