Madagascar’s Gen Z protesters have voiced anger and frustration following coup leader Colonel Michael Randrianirina’s appointment of businessman Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as the country’s new prime minister on Monday.

Rajaonarivelo, a prominent figure in Madagascar’s economic and financial circles, was chosen to replace Ruphin Zafisambo, who had been appointed just two weeks earlier by ousted president Andry Rajoelina.

Announcing the appointment, Randrianirina said Rajaonarivelo was selected for his “experience and strong ties with international organisations that work with us.”

However, leaders of the Gen Z protest movement rejected the move, saying it contradicts the ideals of renewal and inclusion that have driven their weeks-long demonstrations.

In a statement, the youth leaders said the decision was made “without consultation or transparency,” warning that it “betrays the spirit of change demanded by the people.”

The protests, which began in September over water and electricity shortages, have since evolved into a wider uprising that forced Rajoelina from office. Randrianirina seized power in a military coup last week and was sworn in as president on Friday.

The Gen Z movement has demanded clarity on Rajaonarivelo’s selection process and vowed to continue mobilising.

“We will not allow old practices to be passed off as something new,” they declared. “Our revolution will not be hijacked.”
