Academic activities at Lagos State University (LASU) have come to a halt following the commencement of an indefinite strike by staff unions over unresolved grievances with the university management.
The industrial action, which began on Thursday, was declared by the university’s Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In a letter dated 31 July 2025 and addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Unions formally announced their decision to withdraw services.
The notice was jointly signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare and Sylvester O. Idowu, alongside their SSANU counterparts, Oluwaseyi Lawal and Waheed Majekodunmi.
The U directed all staff at the main LASU campus, the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, and LASU Epe campus to vacate their duty posts and cease all official activities.
“Following the resolution at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of LASU Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU & NASU-LASU), we hereby inform you that an indefinite strike action has commenced effective Thursday, July 31, 2025,” the statement read.
It added that the strike would continue until all the unions’ demands are met by the university authorities.
The industrial action comes just days before students were scheduled to begin their second-semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session, slated to start on Monday.
