The Kano Patriotic Coalition of CSOs Forum (KPCF), a coalition comprising 310 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Kano State, has expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at Singer Market.
In a statement on Tuesday signed by Hassan Ibrahim Gama, Mustapha Muhammed Chiroma, and Peter Hassan Tijjani, Convener, Co-convener I, and Co-convener II, respectively, the Forum acknowledged the significant losses and disruptions suffered by marketers and their families, describing the incident as a tragic event that has severely impacted livelihoods.
KPCF commended Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for what it described as exemplary leadership and empathy following the disaster.
The Forum praised the governor’s prompt visit to the scene and his engagement with victims and relevant stakeholders, noting that his actions reflected responsive governance and a strong commitment to the welfare of the people.
The Forum also appreciated the intervention of the Federal Government of Nigeria, which donated ₦5 billion to support affected traders.
It further applauded Governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, for their collective donation of ₦3 billion to the victims.
According to KPCF, the gestures demonstrate national solidarity and a shared commitment to economic recovery and social protection.
The forum also recognized the contributions of private individuals and corporate organizations, as well as the professionalism and coordinated response of emergency agencies.
It particularly commended the Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service, alongside other supporting security and emergency institutions, for their timely intervention, which helped contain the inferno and prevent further destruction.
While acknowledging these efforts, KPCF urged the Kano State Government to establish an independent and credible committee to oversee the transparent and equitable distribution of relief funds to victims, free from favoritism and corruption.
The coalition also recommended improved safety measures across markets in the state, including the enforcement of clearly demarcated emergency access routes at Singer Market and other trading hubs.
It further called for the provision of a reliable water supply in markets to facilitate rapid response during fire incidents, and urged strategic investment in advanced fire-fighting infrastructure, including the procurement of a fire-fighting helicopter to enhance emergency response capacity.
KPCF reaffirmed its commitment to constructive advocacy and partnership with government and stakeholders to promote accountability, disaster preparedness, and the protection of livelihoods across Kano State.
