The Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), the umbrella body of civil society organizations in the state, has expressed concern over the ongoing dispute between the Association of Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) and the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH).
The crisis, according to KONGONET, stems from allegations of marginalization in employment and the university’s alleged non-compliance with disability inclusion laws.
A statement issued on Thursday by KONGONET Chairman, Hamza Aliyu, said the network was displeased with the manner in which the matter was handled, noting that it reflects a disregard for established disability rights frameworks.
KONGONET cited both the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018 and the Kogi State Disability Rights Law, which guarantee equal opportunities and prohibit discrimination in employment, education, health, and access to public services.
“The continued neglect of these provisions undermines both the dignity of citizens and the credibility of governance processes,” the network added.
While acknowledging the frustration of PWDs over perceived marginalization, the KONGONET urged all citizens to express their grievances within the bounds of law and civility.
It cautioned against actions that infringe on the rights of others or disrupt public order.
KONGONET called on the Kogi State Government to prioritize dialogue and mediation, reaffirm its commitment to disability rights laws, establish a transparent framework for the recruitment of PWDs, and strengthen engagement platforms between government institutions and advocacy groups.
The network stressed that peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law remain the most effective pathways to resolving the crisis.
