Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has withdrawn a total of 273 students for poor academic performance and expelled six others over various examination-related offences.

This development was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the institution’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale.

The decision, according to the statement, was among key resolutions reached at the 120th meeting of the Academic Board, held on Thursday, April 17, at the Main Campus Board Room.

Chairman of the Board and Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, praised the Academic Board Result Verification Committee, chaired by Deputy Rector Dr. Samuel Taiwo Olowo, for a thorough job in the review of results. He urged the committee to maintain its diligence in future assessments.

Despite the institution’s effort in creating a conducive learning environment, Professor Usman expressed concern over the unsatisfactory performance that led to the withdrawal of students from 20 departments across 42 programmes.

In a related development, the Board also approved the expulsion of six students found guilty of examination misconduct and related infractions. The decision followed recommendations from the Central Examination Misconduct Committee led by Dr. (Mrs.) Grace Ehimony.

Professor Usman commended the efforts of both the central and departmental examination committees, noting their commitment to upholding academic integrity. He emphasized the need for continued synergy among the committees to sustain teaching and learning standards at the Polytechnic.

Reiterating the management’s commitment to institutional reforms, Professor Usman assured that measures being taken are aimed at strengthening the academic culture and maintaining discipline.

The Rector also used the opportunity to encourage students to remain focused and make the most of the academic resources and support systems provided by the institution.

All withdrawn and expelled students have been directed to return all Polytechnic property in their possession, including identity cards, to the Security Unit before exiting the institution.
