Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Friday addressed Parliament amid escalating public frustration and nationwide protests demanding change.
Flanked by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan and Prince Moulay Rachid, the monarch opened the final legislative year with a call for “seriousness and responsibility” from lawmakers, urging them to complete pending legislation and accelerate national development projects.
The King reaffirmed his commitment to Morocco’s new development model, emphasizing territorial equity, social justice, and inclusive growth.
He appealed for targeted support to vulnerable regions including mountain areas and oases for the implementation of integrated programs to boost rural development.
He also called on all national actors consisting of parliamentarian, political parties, local leaders, and the medi to work together in explaining policies and protecting citizens’ rights.
His address followed a night of youth-led demonstrations that swept through major cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, and Tangier.
Protesters decried corruption, economic hardship, and the deteriorating state of public health and education, accusing the government of prioritizing preparations for the 2030 World Cup over essential services.
Protest organizers had suspended demonstrations ahead of the King’s speech, hoping for a response to their grievances.
Now, all eyes are on the Palace to see whether the monarch’s words signal genuine reform or mark yet another moment of unfulfilled promise.
