Muhammad Musa Murtala, the Provost of Kebbi State College of Nursing and Sciences, Birnin Kebbi, says the college is among the top 10 Colleges of Nursing in Nigeria.

The provost, who disclosed in an interview with newsmen in his office in Birnin Kebbi, said the college had recorded tremendous achievements in the last 21 years.

He said: “Kebbi State College of Nursing Sciences, Birnin Kebbi is 21 years old now and is one the Colleges of Nursing Sciences that are fast growing because presently we are among the top best ten colleges in the country.

“We believe this is a legacy and achievement that can be attributed to the commitment of the leadership that we have by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu.

“Because ever since that he came on board, he has been very supportive of the institution. Since the creation of the college in 2004, no administration has turned its attention to the institution.

“This is the first time that we have a governor that has the institution and nursing professional at heart and that gave us the joy that we have a committed governor who gingered us to achieve the mandate of establishing the institution.”

The provost recalled that the college had its full accreditation in Aug. 2023 from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, barely three to four months after the governor assumed duty.

According to him, the accreditation has paved the way for an increase in the institution’s student intake capacity from 100 to 150 for Basic Nursing and Basic Midwifery programs.

He said the increase in the intake capacity was a result of a recommendation by the accreditation team, who physically inspected the infrastructure and the entire environment of the college during their visit.

Murtala noted with satisfaction that the institution had been upgraded to a college, “we are also having another accreditation by another regulatory body that is the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

“Already, we have commenced the Higher National Diploma (HND) program where we have about two sets, the first set is now in HND I, which ideally after the second year, the institution is supposed to have an accreditation for HND.

“Alhamdulillah, we wrote to His Excellency, and out of his commitment, he graciously approved the NBTE accreditation, and from now until to end of Oct. we are expecting an accreditation team for ND and HND resource accreditation.”

Because the state governor has passion and test, the provost said the college administration dwelled its attention on the massive renovation of some infrastructure within the institution to give the college a befitting outlook.

He commended Gov. Idris for approving the upward review of the college’s monthly cash allocation from N1.5 million to N10 million, apart from donating a new 13-seater bus to aid the 20-year-old buses of the college.

The provost also said that given the interest the governor has for the institution he has approved the procurement and replacement of 20-year-old chairs for the classrooms and promised to construct an ICT center in the institution.

“I told you that we have a governor that has a passion for the college, if the vehicles, the chairs, and structures all together are 20 years old, and today, he is coming to replace them with new ones, at least it’s something commendable, we have someone who remembered us.

“The governor also connected us with band A National Grid for our students to enjoy 24 hours uninterrupted power supply and we have seen the results of that going by the first set of midwives we have graduated.

“We have 95 percent success, because out of the 47 students that sat for the exams 45 passed. We will never go down, we will continue to go higher than that,” he assured.
