The Katsina State Government has announced free medical care for residents diagnosed with typhoid fever, including those requiring surgery for typhoid perforation.
Dr. Bala Salisu-Zango, Commissioner for Information and Culture, made this known in a statement on Monday, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access and reducing the burden of infectious diseases in the state.
According to the statement, five designated hospitals will provide the free treatment: General Hospital Katsina, Turai Yar’adua Hospital Katsina, General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital Katsina, General Hospital Jibia, and General Hospital Funtua.
Salisu-Zango said the initiative is designed to ensure timely and adequate treatment for patients, and to help curb the spread of the disease, particularly during the rainy season when cases often rise due to poor sanitation and contaminated water.
“Typhoid fever remains a serious health concern in Katsina and other parts of Nigeria,” he noted. “The state government is stepping in to offer free diagnosis, medication, surgery, and follow-up care to ease the financial burden on affected individuals.”
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Musa Adamu, emphasized the importance of early treatment to avoid severe complications.
“Our goal is to protect the health and wellbeing of Katsina residents. By offering free care, we hope to promote early intervention and reduce the overall incidence of this preventable disease,” Adamu said.
He encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms such as prolonged fever, abdominal pain, headache, and fatigue to visit the nearest designated hospital. He also urged residents to adopt preventive measures, including handwashing, drinking clean water, and maintaining proper hygiene.
