Kano Vows to Crackdown on Contractors at Ten Project Sites

The Kano State Ministry for Public Procurement, Project Monitoring, and Evaluation (MPPPM&E) has issued a warning to contractors working on ten key projects across seven local government areas, urging them to accelerate work or risk contract termination.

During a monitoring tour, the Honorable Commissioner, Nura Ma’aji Sumaila, expressed deep dissatisfaction with the slow progress observed at multiple sites.

Bebeji 5KM Road Project

The Bebeji Local Government Chairman, Hon. Alasan Salisu, voiced concerns over the contractor, Power Hill Construction Limited, stating that the company had failed to deliver on its commitments despite multiple warnings. In response, the Honorable Commissioner issued a final two-week ultimatum for the contractor to show significant progress.

Kano State Drugs & Medical Consumables Supply Agency Project

At the Kano State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency site, where construction of a medical storage facility has stalled despite receiving a 50% mobilization fee since September last year, the Commissioner expressed serious concern. He summoned the contractor and the client ministry for an urgent discussion on the project’s status.

Kura-Kubarachi-Madobi Road Project

Residents along the Kura-Kubarachi-Madobi road raised fears over a critical bridge that remains unfinished ahead of the rainy season. The Honorable Commissioner ordered the contractor to expedite work to prevent potential disruptions and safety risks.

Bebeji General Hospital Renovation

The monitoring team identified construction errors and substandard renovation work at Bebeji General Hospital. As a result, the Honorable Commissioner ordered an immediate halt to all work until further discussions are held with the contractor.

Kumbotso 5KM Road Project

The Kumbotso 5KM road project is significantly behind schedule and unlikely to meet the five-month deadline set by His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf. The Commissioner reminded the contractor of their gentleman’s agreement and stressed the importance of timely completion.

Dorayi Babba-Kuntau Road Project

The contractor for the Dorayi Babba-Kuntau Road project cited changes in project scope and unforeseen waterway challenges as reasons for delays. The Commissioner acknowledged the issue but urged the contractor to find solutions and speed up work.

Dorawar Yan Kifi Road Encroachment Issues

At Dorawar Yan Kifi Road, Rijiyar Zaki, Ungogo LGA, the monitoring team identified possible encroachment on both sides of the road. The Commissioner instructed contractors to strictly adhere to the original road design and specifications.

The tour also included inspections of Renovation work at the Informatics Institute, Kura, Office of the Special Advisor to the Governor on Labour Matters, and Fencing of the graveyard in Bebeji Local Government.

The MPPPM&E remains committed to ensuring the quality and timely execution of public projects and will take decisive action against underperforming contractors.
