As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) begins another phase of nationwide voter registration, Kano State has set an ambitious target of registering 10 million eligible voters.

To drive the campaign, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has inaugurated a high-powered Taskforce on Voter Registration.

Speaking at the inauguration in Kano, the Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, underscored the importance of mobilizing citizens to actively participate.

“Voter registration is more than a civic duty; it is a compulsory responsibility,” he said, stressing that the initiative is vital for shaping the future of Kano and Nigeria.

The taskforce, chaired by the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, consists of 36 members drawn from government officials, traditional leaders, clerics, business moguls, journalists, youth representatives, and even opposition parties, making it an all-inclusive effort.

Ibrahim revealed that Kano currently has about five million registered voters, adding: “We expect to double that figure to ten million. This is not just a number; it is a reflection of our commitment to democratic participation.”

He charged the committee to ensure fairness, transparency, and inclusivity, while working closely with INEC to provide facilities and eliminate barriers to registration.

The Governor’s representative also urged the taskforce to embark on robust public enlightenment across all 44 local government areas, tackle voter apathy, and ensure that registrants not only register but also collect their voter cards.

In his acceptance remarks, Comrade Waiya described the assignment as a call to service. “We assure His Excellency of our full commitment, and Insha Allah, we will not disappoint him,” he said, noting that the committee’s diverse membership positions it to mobilize citizens effectively.

With voter registration ongoing, Kano’s bold 10 million target reflects a renewed commitment to democratic engagement, with officials vowing to ensure that citizens not only register but also use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
