An investigation by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has compelled the full delivery of furniture to Kuraye Primary School in Garko Local Government Area of Kano State, sparing hundreds of pupils from the daily struggle of learning in overcrowded, uncomfortable classrooms.

Between October 2020 and September 2021, a contract was awarded for 120 sets of furniture to be supplied to the school by Musa Biyu Garko Nig. Ltd. However, when this reporter visited the school on July 22, only 60 chairs were found in use, leaving over 230 pupils crammed onto inadequate desks. Some pupils were forced to squeeze four to a two-seater bench, while others shared old, rickety three-seater desks.

Headmaster Auwal Hassan described the situation as unbearable. “We merged six pupils on three-seaters and four pupils on two-seaters. It was difficult for them to concentrate and learn,” he said.

Following the ICIR investigation, the remaining 60 sets of furniture—previously held at the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA)—were released and delivered to the school.

During a follow-up visit, the headmaster expressed relief and gratitude: “I am very happy to see the furniture returned. Now, our pupils can sit comfortably and focus on learning. May Almighty bless and protect you. I urge you to continue this work.”

With the arrival of the full 120 sets of furniture, students of Kuraye Primary School now have a more conducive learning environment—demonstrating how accountability journalism can drive real change in communities.
