Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to promoting professionalism and ethical standards in media practice.
He also assured continued collaboration with stakeholders to sanitize the media space.
Waiya made the remarks when he received the leadership of the Young Female Professionals in Media (YFPM) during a courtesy visit to his office.
He stressed that the ministry has a tradition of working with partners to advance the media and information sector, commending the group for its initiative, which he described as timely and aligned with the ministry’s mandate of promoting responsible journalism.
“The media today is bedevilled by unethical practices, both on social media and even in conventional platforms.
“This is a serious concern to us as a government because it damages the reputation of our state and the profession itself. That is why we are committed to working with groups like yours to restore integrity and professionalism,” Waiya said.
He disclosed that the state government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has agreed to establish a committee of veteran journalists, the League of Veteran Journalists, to design strategies that will strengthen ethical conduct in the profession.
Earlier, YFPM Secretary, Maryam Usman Nagado, described the association as the first-ever organized coalition of young women in the media sector in Kano and beyond.
She said the group is made up of passionate female journalists, broadcasters, and media practitioners dedicated to mentoring upcoming journalists, amplifying women’s voices, and promoting social development through responsible journalism.
She added that the courtesy visit was to introduce the association and seek a structured partnership with the ministry through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering training, advocacy, media literacy, and women’s empowerment in journalism.
The group also commended the commissioner for his efforts in driving positive transformation within Kano’s media industry.
