The Municipal Local Government Council Chairman, Salim Hashim Idris Gwangwazo, has flagged off a free eye care program for residents suffering from glaucoma, trachoma, cataracts, and other vision-related illnesses.

According to the Municipal Zonal Information Officer, Abdullahi Musa Gyadi Gyadi, the initiative is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s healthcare agenda, implemented through the State Primary Healthcare Management Board in collaboration with the local government, international donors, and health partners.

The initiative includes eye examinations, provision of medication, free eyeglasses, and surgical interventions for serious cases, particularly for the less privileged.

Represented by the Supervisory Councillor for Health, Mustapha Darma, the chairman urged residents to continue supporting the state government’s efforts to provide quality healthcare services, noting that the government recently sponsored free eye treatment for 500 people across several local governments in Kano State.

The Municipal Primary Healthcare Coordinator, Lawan Jafar, explained that patients with mild cases would receive advice, medicine, or eyeglasses, while those with severe conditions would be sponsored for surgery. He commended the health workers and doctors for the program’s success.

Some beneficiaries, including Malam Shafi’u Wada, Imam Yakasai, and Abubakar Isah Jahun, expressed gratitude to the state and local governments for their support and pledged continued prayers for the success of the current administration.

The exercise, led by Dr. Kamal Saleh, recorded wide success and was hailed as a significant step in tackling preventable blindness in the community.
