The Kano State Government has unveiled a fleet of electric cargo tricycles aimed at supporting women farmers in transporting their agricultural produce while promoting clean energy and environmental sustainability.

The initiative, led by Mata Zallah Entrepreneurs with backing from Prompcom+ under the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), was commissioned by Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, at the Mata Zallah Smart Agro-Cargo Base Station in Rugar Gundutse, Karfi Junction, Kura Local Government Area.

Dr. Hashim lauded the women-led organization for integrating technology, environmental protection, and women’s economic empowerment.

“This project enhances women’s livelihoods, reduces post-harvest losses, and lowers environmental pollution. It shows how innovation can drive sustainable growth while protecting our environment,” he said.

He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the program, noting that it complements Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s vision of empowering women and promoting a clean and sustainable Kano.

The electric tricycles will enable women farmers and agro-entrepreneurs to transport produce efficiently without relying on petrol or diesel vehicles, cutting costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Mata Zallah Smart Agro-Cargo Base will also serve as a hub for training and logistics management, expanding women’s participation in agribusiness and climate-smart innovation across rural communities.

Stakeholders praised the partnership between local innovators and international development partners, highlighting it as a model for advancing economic resilience and climate-friendly agriculture in Nigeria.
