Kano Inaugurates High-Level Committee To Define Position On Constitutional Amendments

In a decisive step to ensure Kano State’s interests are well represented in the ongoing constitutional amendment process initiated by the National Assembly, the state government has inaugurated a 26-member high-powered committee tasked with articulating the state’s official position.

The inauguration ceremony was performed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouq Ibrahim, on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the Cabinet Office in Kano.

Farouq stated that the committee comprises respected professionals and national thought leaders with deep experience in governance and public policy.

The committee is chaired by renowned constitutional lawyer, Prof. Auwalu Yadudu, with Professor Hafiz Abubakar, MFR, serving as Co-Chairman.

Other notable members include:

Prof. Habu Muhammad (Mambayya House, BUK)

Ali Ibrahim Matawalle (Kano Emirate Council)

Azumi Bebeji

Aisha Ibrahim Dankani, mni (Convener, K-LEADS)

Hon. Muhammad Tajo Othman (Commissioner for Local Governments)

AVM Ibrahim Umar (Rtd) (Commissioner for Internal Security)

Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim K/Mata (Commissioner, Ministry of Science & Technology)

Sa’adatu Salisu Yushe’u (ALGON Rep), among others.

To support its operations, a secretariat led by Umar Muhammad Jalo, Permanent Secretary at the Cabinet Office, has been established.

He will be assisted by Abdulkadir Shehu, Ibrahim Bawa, and Aminu Ibrahim Bichi as Co-Secretaries.

The SSG tasked the committee with thoroughly analyzing the proposed constitutional amendments and identifying critical areas of interest to Kano State.

These include local government autonomy, the creation of state police, the role of traditional rulers, resource control, and the establishment of a national local government electoral body.

He emphasized the need for extensive public engagement and encouraged the committee to gather broad-based input from stakeholders to produce a comprehensive position paper that would inform Kano’s legislative submissions.

Farouq also commended the committee’s intention to leverage media platforms to raise public awareness and promote inclusive dialogue.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Prof. Habu Muhammad, Committee Chairman, Prof. Yadudu expressed gratitude to Governor Yusuf for the confidence placed in the committee.

He pledged a diligent and transparent process and called for public support through active participation and prayers.

The committee’s work is expected to shape Kano State’s stance in the national constitutional review, aligning it with the aspirations of its citizens and strengthening the state’s voice in Nigeria’s evolving federal landscape.
