Kano State has convened its maiden Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Conference as part of efforts to strengthen democratic governance, promote accountability, and enhance collaboration between government and citizens.

The two-day event, which opened on Monday at Khairun University, was organized by the State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs.

It brought together government officials, traditional leaders, civil society advocates, academics, and development partners.

Declaring the conference open, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to institutionalizing partnerships with CSOs in shaping policies, monitoring projects, and advancing citizen engagement.

“Together, we can bridge the gap between government plans and community realities,” Gwarzo said, while urging participants to strengthen CSOs’ institutional capacity, promote synergy among stakeholders, and harness technology for civic engagement.

He further emphasized empowering youth, advancing gender justice, and building resilience against governance challenges.

Governor Yusuf noted the increasing role of CSOs in tackling issues such as education, healthcare, climate change, anti-corruption advocacy, and conflict resolution, stressing that civil society must remain a trusted partner in consolidating democracy.

He assured that recommendations from the conference would be integrated into actionable government policies.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the event as a landmark in Kano’s governance history.

He highlighted reforms under the Yusuf administration, including the amended 2021 Public Procurement Law, designed to ensure transparency, value for money, and citizen trust.

“Transparency is not an end in itself; it is a journey that requires courage, humility, and commitment from both government and civil society,” Waiya said.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, the District Head of Rimin Gado, Auwalu Mudi Yakasai, commended the state government for opening its doors to civil society and fostering participatory governance.

The conference, themed “Empowering CSOs in Kano for a Sustainable Future: Uniting for Active Democratic Participation and Grassroots Development,” featured panel discussions, scholarly presentations, and goodwill messages.

A communique outlining strategies to strengthen civic engagement and accountability is expected at its conclusion.
