Kano Governor Immortalizes 22 Athletes Who Died In Tragic Accident

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has immortalized the 22 Athletes who died in a tragic accident on their way back to Kano from the National Sports Festival held in May 2025.

He said they made Kano people proud and they should be remembered forever.

Mustapha Muhammad, the spokesperson to the Governor, in a statement, said the Governor Yusuf announced that the Kano State Sports Institute has been renamed in honour of the 22 athletes, and will henceforth be known as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute.

The statement further said, the Kano State Sports Commission would be named as Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission.

Governor Yusuf made this known during a courtesy visit by the team of First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs. Remi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who donated One Hundred and Ten Million naira (N110, 000, 000) to the families of the 22 Athletes who died in a tragic accident just 5 kilometers away from Kano.

He said they are heroes who fought for the success of Kano in the National Sports Festival.

The Governor states that the government will take care of their children’s education, and their wives will be engaged in government empowerment schemes.

Furthermore, those with no wives, their parents should be considered in the empowerment drive.
