Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the implementation of promotions for 18,984 teaching and non-teaching staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for the January and July 2026 promotion cycles.

The approval covers eligible personnel across the state’s 44 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), with the state government releasing N235.12 million for the exercise.

The Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Yusuf Kabir, had submitted a request seeking approval for the funds to implement the promotions, according to a letter dated 2 September 2026.

The Board said the affected staff comprised eligible teaching and non-teaching personnel whose promotions for the two cycles had been processed, including the corresponding salary adjustments.

It said timely implementation of promotions was critical to boosting staff morale, supporting career development, strengthening capacity and improving service delivery in the basic education sector.

SUBEB noted that it remains one of the largest public institutions in Kano State, with approximately 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel serving across the 44 LGEAs.

The Board said the present administration inherited outstanding promotion backlogs involving arrears spanning seven years, as well as another backlog of about one and a half years.

According to SUBEB, Governor Yusuf had previously approved and ensured the implementation of the inherited promotion backlogs.

The Board said the intervention had significantly improved staff morale, restored confidence in the public service and demonstrated the administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers.

SUBEB further disclosed that it had completed all necessary processes for the January and July 2026 promotions, including verification of staff eligibility and computation of salary adjustments.

The governor’s approval was subsequently ratified by the State Executive Council, paving the way for the release of the approved funds and implementation of the promotions.

The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
