Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title were put to the test for the first time in a meaningful way when they played free-scoring, in-form Chelsea. They breezed through it as the Reds fought their way to a 2-1 triumph over Enzo Maresca’s team on Sunday.
It should come as no surprise that Mohamed Salah was instrumental in both goals and assists, but Curtis Jones stole the show. Perhaps against the flow of play, Liverpool’s homegrown hero won the penalty, from which Salah broke the deadlock after 29 minutes. And it was Jones who gave the home team their lead back in just 76 seconds, following Chelsea’s early second-half equalizer through Nicolas Jackson.
Even though Liverpool wasn’t at their best, they managed to win and move back to the top of the Premier League standings, one point ahead of Manchester City, because of their remarkable fortitude, poise, and spirit.
