The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) on Friday declared an indefinite strike, effective from midnight.

The union said the action would continue until the government implements the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union, Kabiru Minjibir, warned that the strike would severely disrupt medical services and academic activities nationwide. He noted that the government had made no meaningful effort to reach an agreement with the unions.

The decision followed a closed-door meeting after several ultimatums and earlier strike threats by JOHESU over the government’s failure to honour key agreements.

The meeting was attended by leaders of various health sector unions, including the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria.

JOHESU, which has been in negotiations with the government for years, expressed frustration over the persistent delay in implementing critical commitments, particularly the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 29 October 2024.

However, the Minister of State for Health, Iziaq Salako, assured that the union’s demands were currently receiving the government’s attention.
