The Chairman of Malam Madori Local Government in Jigawa, Mr Salisu Garungabas, has threatened to sanction absentee teachers.
The chairman gave the warning while addressing newsmen after disbursing N50,000 each as scholarship to 25 students in the area on Monday.
”A base-line survey conducted after I assumed duties, showed that teachers in several out of the 109 schools in this area, do not go to work.
”This is one of the reasons for the deteriorating condition of education in this area, which we must urgently address.
”Education is key in every sphere of human life. We are advising the teachers to turn a new leaf. We will not relent in sanctioning any teacher who doesn’t attend school.
“There are several unemployed graduates looking for jobs that we can engage if the employed ones are abusing the opportunity given to them,” he said.
Garungabas further advised youths in the area, to obtain quality education and acquire skills, in order to cope with the challenging times.
The local government under his administration according to him, will continue to offer support to education, in order to breed an educated future generation.
