Farmers in Jigawa State face the risk of huge losses following reports of poor-quality fertilizer flooding local markets.
The state chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) raised the alarm over the influx of substandard products, vowing to work with relevant stakeholders to address the problem.
Speaking after the association’s executive meeting, Jigawa AFAN Chairman, Engr. Auwal Garba Ibrahim, said the group had engaged the Consumer Protection Agency, which pledged to track down those producing and selling fake fertilizers.
He urged farmers to provide credible information to the association and authorities on the activities of unscrupulous traders undermining national food security.
In a separate development, Jigawa AFAN welcomed the Supreme Court judgment affirming Dr. Faruku Mudi as the substantive National President of AFAN, describing it as a major step toward stabilizing the organization.
Engr. Ibrahim noted that the leadership tussle had for years hindered the association’s performance, leaving many farmers’ issues unattended.
He expressed optimism that the ruling would unite Nigerian farmers, protect their interests, and strengthen the drive for sustainable food security, growth, and development.
The chapter urged the National President to view the judgment as a collective victory and extend an olive branch to all opposing factions in the interest of peace and progress.
