The Jigawa State Consumer Protection Committee (CPC) has arrested several suspects and seized counterfeit agricultural and food products during a clampdown on fake fertilizer vendors across the state.
In a statement on Wednesday, CPC chairman Umar Alhaji Bala revealed that the committee launched a statewide operation after receiving reports of fraudulent activities threatening food production and security.
The operation led to the confiscation of fake fertilizer bags in Babura and Sara markets.
“In Babura, six bags of fertilizer without NAFDAC numbers or company names were seized, while 40 more suspected fake bags were intercepted in the Sara market,” Bala stated.
Additionally, CPC officials seized a questionable milk powder product, branded as “non-dairy creamer,” in Mallam Madori, following consumer complaints of stomach discomfort.
The arrested suspects have been handed over to the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and prosecution.
Bala urged farmers to be cautious when purchasing farm inputs and reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to protecting consumers and maintaining product standards across Jigawa.
