The wife of the Jigawa State Governor, Her Excellency, Amina Umar Namadi, has flagged off the training of 600 women in waste recycling management, aimed at environmental protection, job creation, and poverty eradication.
The First Lady inaugurated the training as part of activities organized to mark the celebration of the 2025 International Women’s Day with the Theme: Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. And Empowerment.”
Speaking at the occasion, Amina Namadi stated that women are critical components for achieving sustainable social and economic development in any society. She emphasized that protecting their economic and human rights is key to building an ideal society.
She noted that the training of 600 women in waste recycling management is an initiative with multiple impacts. It empowers women to become self-reliant, promotes job creation, and improves environmental protection for sustainable development.
The Governor’s wife commended UNICEF and the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) for developing the initiative, which aligns with Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s 12-point agenda, including empowerment and environmental protection.
In his speech, the Managing Director of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) Alhaji Adanu Sabo highlighted that converting waste into economic opportunities would also yield extended health and environmental protection benefits.
He assured that the agency would continue to collaborate with partners to promote such initiatives.
On his part, the National President of the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria, Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima, revealed that under the initiative, their association aims to train and engage 100,000 women and youth in waste recycling management over the next two years.
He added that this year alone, they target to evacuate and recycle over 100,000 kg of rubber and other related substances that harm the environment if not properly managed.
