Israel’s foreign minister has stated that Israeli forces in Gaza have assassinated Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas and the main mastermind behind the war-starting attack on Israel last year.
President Joe Biden compares the sentiment in the US following the assassination of al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden to Sinwar’s passing, saying it is a “good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world.”
Speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, Biden announced on Thursday that he would like to offer his congratulations “and to discuss the pathway for bringing the hostages home to their families, and for ending this war once and for all.”
In light of Sinwar’s passing, according to Biden, “there is now the chance for a “day after” in Gaza without Hamas in power, and for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”
