The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to public concerns surrounding the recently released timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, particularly the dates fixed for the conduct of the polls.

In a statement issued to clarify the Commission’s position, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, explained that the timetable was developed in strict compliance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022.

The Commission recalled that its Regulations and Guidelines, in place since 2019, clearly stipulate when general elections are to be conducted.

According to Paragraph 2 of the Regulations, elections into the offices of President and Vice President, as well as the National Assembly, are to be held on the third Saturday of February in a general election year.

Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to take place two weeks later.

In line with these provisions, INEC fixed Saturday, 20 February 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while Saturday, 6 March 2027, was set for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

However, the Commission acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain nationally recognized holidays and observances.

INEC assured Nigerians that it remains sensitive to legitimate concerns that could affect electoral participation and the smooth conduct of the elections.

The Commission disclosed that it is currently engaging in consultations and may, if necessary, seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the issues raised, provided that any adjustments remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

Reaffirming its commitment, INEC pledged to uphold transparency, inclusivity, and credibility in the conduct of the 2027 General Election, adding that the public will be duly informed of any further developments.
