The Federal Government’s Mining Marshals shut down an illegal mining site in Damau, Kubau Local Council of Kaduna State on May 4, 2025.

The site, rich in tin and legally owned by Trobell Minerals Limited, had been occupied by illegal miners for months, causing significant economic losses, environmental degradation, and insecurity, according to community reports.

The operation employed a non-confrontational approach, relying on community engagement and diplomacy.

Segun Tomori, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, disclosed that the Marshals consulted traditional rulers and mobilised local support to achieve a peaceful resolution.

Under official supervision, the illegal miners vacated the site without resistance, a move that drew commendation from community leaders.

“The diplomatic approach is commendable. The activities of the dislodged illegal miners posed a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and investment. This intervention brings long-awaited relief.”

The operation’s success aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing illegal mining and ensuring sector growth. During the Mining Marshals’ first anniversary celebration, Alake pledged additional resources and operational support to empower the squad for greater effectiveness.

“The reward for hard work is more work,” Alake said, lauding the operatives. He urged communities nationwide to support federal efforts to eradicate illegal mining and cooperate with the Marshals to identify offenders.

“The Kaduna operation could serve as a model for future interventions if we get the buy-in of locals and community leaders,” he said.

“Illegal mining and insecurity remain major obstacles to the development of the mining sector.

“However, the outcome in Damau offers a glimpse of how a mix of enforcement and dialogue can turn the tide.

“I urge communities to cooperate with us to deal with this menace and restore investor confidence in the sector.”
