The International Human Rights Commission- Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT) has issued a public health advisory to address growing concerns and complaints from members of the public regarding Thallium Sulfate, a highly toxic chemical substance.
In a statement made available to Stallion Time on Tuesday by the Country Director, Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the organization said it received reports of circulating rumors alleging that the substance is being imported into Nigeria by certain individuals.
However, it stressed that such claims remain unverified and urged citizens to avoid panic, speculation, and the spread of unconfirmed information.
The Commission explained that Thallium Sulfate is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it particularly dangerous.
It noted that the substance poses serious health risks if ingested or absorbed into the body.
According to the statement, thallium mimics potassium in the human body, allowing it to enter cells without immediate detection.
Symptoms of exposure may take between 24 and 48 hours, or even longer, to manifest.
Early signs include headache and fever, while advanced poisoning can result in severe leg pain, difficulty walking, gastrointestinal damage, hair loss, and progressive nerve and organ failure.
Without prompt medical intervention, the condition can become life-threatening.
The organization advised that anyone who suspects possible exposure, particularly after consuming food or drinks in uncertain environments, should immediately seek medical attention.
It recommended requesting a blood test, urine test, and hair analysis to aid early diagnosis, noting that prompt detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.
The IHRC-RFT emphasized that the notice was issued strictly for public health awareness and responsible information sharing.
It also called on security and regulatory authorities to investigate any credible information through appropriate legal channels.
The statement concluded by urging members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and guided by verified information in the interest of public safety.
