IHRC-RFT Nigeria Calls for Judicial Reform, Protection of Detainees’ Rights

Isiyaku Ahmed

The International Human Rights Commission – RFT Nigeria Chapter (IHRC-RFT), accredited by the United Nations ECOSOC, emphasizes the urgent need for fair treatment and transparent judicial oversight for all detainees, particularly vulnerable minors.

IHRC-RFT reaffirms its commitment to upholding human dignity and ensuring that detainees’ rights are protected in alignment with Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights standards.

Upholding Justice, Dignity, and Fair Treatment

IHRC-RFT stresses that:

Article 1, UDHR: All individuals are entitled to freedom, equality, and dignity.

Article 3, UDHR: Every person has the right to life, liberty, and personal security, demanding humane treatment and access to basic needs.

Section 34(1), Nigerian Constitution: All individuals are entitled to dignity and must not face inhuman or degrading treatment.

Call for Fair Judicial Oversight and Age Verification

IHRC-RFT urges Nigerian judicial bodies to adopt transparent procedures for verifying detainees’ ages to protect minors from inappropriate legal proceedings, in line with Article 25 of the UDHR and Section 17(3)(f) of the Nigerian Constitution.

Commitment to Protecting Nigeria’s Youth

Young detainees are especially vulnerable, and Article 5 of the UDHR and Section 42(1) of the Nigerian Constitution mandate protections against cruel treatment and discrimination. IHRC-RFT calls on the judiciary to uphold these principles.

In Conclusion

The IHRC-RFT Nigeria Chapter remains unwavering in its commitment to a fair, just society that values human dignity, equity, and justice. As such, we politely remind the government that we will not remain silent until justice is served for every detainee, especially vulnerable minors.

To reinforce our commitment, we will be forwarding this matter to our headquarters in New York to ensure greater international visibility and accountability.

We urge judicial and governmental bodies to prioritize humane reforms in line with Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights standards.
