IHRC-RFT Commends President Tinubu’s Compassion, Advocates for Judicial Independence

Stallion Times

The International Human Rights Commission – RFT Nigeria Chapter (IHRC-RFT), an organization holding special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), commends the compassionate decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to pardon 119 individuals detained in connection with the August 1 protests in Kano and Kaduna States.

This act of clemency embodies the values of fairness and second chances, aligning with the fundamental principles enshrined in both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the Nigerian Constitution.

Reflecting the rights guaranteed under Articles 1 and 10 of the UDHR, which advocate for equality and fair treatment, we appreciate the decision as a testament to the government’s willingness to acknowledge citizens’ rights to justice and dignity.

This release, which followed collaborative efforts by various NGOs, legal advocates, and community leaders, highlights the power of unity and advocacy for human rights.

We also recognize the dedication of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who reinforced the government’s commitment to providing these individuals with an opportunity to contribute positively to society.

Our gratitude extends to the governors of Kaduna and Kano States, as well as the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, for facilitating a smooth transition for these individuals back to their communities.

IHRC-RFT is particularly grateful for the efforts of all stakeholders—including NGOs, lawyers, and community associations—who tirelessly advocated for the rights of those detained.

Their commitment to the values of justice, as enshrined in Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution (which guarantees the right to fair hearing), is commendable.

In addition to celebrating this positive development, IHRC-RFT urges the Nigerian government to reaffirm its commitment to an independent judiciary—a cornerstone of democracy that allows judges to uphold the law impartially, as emphasized in Article 8 of the UDHR.

A judiciary free from external pressures is essential for safeguarding human rights and ensuring a just society.

We encourage the pardoned individuals to seize this opportunity for growth and positive reintegration, reaffirming their role in fostering peace and respect for the law.

IHRC-RFT Nigeria Chapter, under the leadership of Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, remains committed to advocating for human rights, promoting judicial independence, and strengthening Nigeria’s adherence to the UDHR and national constitutional values.

Alhamdulillah, we are thankful for this impactful progress and look forward to continued partnerships with all stakeholders in advancing justice and human rights.

Signed,

Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu
Country Director, IHRC-RFT Nigeria
