The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested a young couple and five others for allegedly conducting a marriage ceremony without parental consent or following Islamic guidelines in the Nasarawa area of Kano metropolis.
Those arrested include the groom, Aminu, 23, and his bride, Sadiya, 22. Others in custody are Umar, 24, who acted as the groom’s representative; Abubakar, 23, who served as the bride’s guardian; Usaina, 21; and two other young women who witnessed the ceremony.
According to reports, the marriage was conducted with a bride price of ₦10,000, but without the approval of the couple’s parents or the endorsement of recognised Islamic authorities.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujaheeddeen Aminuddeen, said the arrests were made after residents reported the alleged “illegal” union to the authorities.
He explained that the act violated Islamic teachings and the state’s marriage regulations, emphasising that the Hisbah Board would not tolerate actions that disregard established religious and legal procedures.
Dr. Aminuddeen added that the suspects are currently in Hisbah custody while investigations continue.
