Bruno Fernandes marked his 200th appearance for Manchester United with a decisive display in their 2-1 win over Chelsea, underlining his influence on Ruben Amorim’s team.

The 31-year-old captain, who also scored his 100th goal for the club, epitomised his passion late in the game when he pressed Reece James, drove 40 yards forward, and urged the Stretford End to lift the team, before nervously watching from the bench after being substituted.

Manager Amorim praised his leadership, saying: “He deserves to be in the history of our club, not just for what he does but for what the team achieves.”

Since joining from Sporting Lisbon for £47m in 2020, Fernandes has often carried United through turbulent times, despite criticism of his discipline and defensive lapses. He rejected a lucrative Saudi offer last summer, and Amorim has since deployed him in a deeper role to dictate play.

United, aiming for back-to-back Premier League wins under Amorim for the first time, visit Brentford next weekend with Casemiro suspended but Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha back fit.
