Former Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau, Domingos Simoes Pereira, has declared his intention to return home and contest the presidency.
Pereira, who heads the opposition African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), made the announcement in Lisbon, where he has been living since President Umaro Sissoco Embalo dissolved the National Assembly in 2023.
Addressing members of the Guinea-Bissau diaspora, Pereira admitted concerns for his personal safety but stressed that he felt duty-bound to continue his political struggle.
In response, President Embalo said the opposition leader could safely return to the country but cautioned him against challenging the outcome of the November elections.
If confirmed, this would mark Pereira’s fourth bid for Guinea-Bissau’s highest office.
