Governor Yusuf Appoints Amb. Ibrahim Waiya as Commissioner for Information

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has appointed Amb. Ibrahim Waiya as Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs.

Amb. Waiya and six other Commissioners took the oath of office and allegiance on Monday at Kano State Government House.

A statement issued by the Governor’s spokesman Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said Governor Yusuf urged the new appointees to serve with dedication, integrity, and humility to salvage the present administration’s high expectations from the state citizens.

The statement also quoted the Governor saying the choice of the new State Executive Council members was duly considered to accelerate his administration’s vision centered on good governance, sustainable development, and the well-being of the citizens.

Before his appointment, Amb. Waiya was the Executive Director of Citizens for Development and Education (CDE) and President of the Kano Civil Society Forum.

He has dedicated many years advocating for democracy, good governance, anti-corruption, peacebuilding, and women’s empowerment. 

Amb. Waiya has several academic qualifications, including a Higher National Diploma in Public Administration from Kano State Polytechnic, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, a Master’s in Public International Law at Maryam Abacha, American University, Maradi, and is pursuing a doctor of philosophy in International Relations at Skyline University, Kano.

He was the Director of the Alhilal Foundation from 2003 to 2007 and later coordinated the North West Zonal Office of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Foundation.

Amb. Waiya led and coordinated several Local Government Councils Elections Observation missions across 19 Northern states.

His involvement in election observation coordination missions and various public engagements highlights his commitment to civic engagement toward community development, democracy, and good governance.

Amb. Waiya’s extensive experience includes support service to many Government Ministries and Agencies such as the Kano State Ministry for Women Affairs and Social Development, Kano State Ministry for Community and Rural Development, Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor of Kano State on Child Welfare, Ministry for Special Duties, Office of the Special Adviser, Joint Security Services.

He has facilitated numerous training workshops and seminars, impacting knowledge, skills, and experience in the community, particularly for community-based organizations.

He is the Chairman of the Conference of Northern States Civil Society Networks, Convener of Nigeria for Peace Project, Managing Partner of United Nigeria Project, Head of the Secretariat of the Kano Peace Committee, Secretary General of the National Action for Women Agenda (NAWA), and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Northern Youth Assembly, (Majalisar Matasan Arewa).

Amb. Waiya is a Fellow of the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies, the Institute of International Peace and Secure Society, and the Institute of Business Diplomacy and Financial Management.

He is also a member of the Commission of Inquiry on Missing Persons, the Implementation Committee, on the Recommendations of the Report of the Commission of Inquiry on Missing Persons, the Commission of Inquiry to investigate, various political violence and cases of missing persons, that occurred in the State from 2015 – 2023, and the Commission of Inquiry to investigate protest, arson, and destruction of public and private properties that occurred from 1st – 10th August, 2024.

Amb. Waiya, served as a consultant on various government projects such as the Kano State Security Trust Fund, Safe Corridor, and Campaign against Drug Abuse, across the 44 Local Government Council Areas.

His active participation in peacebuilding, policy advocacy, and legislative reform has continued to impact positive change in Kano State, the North, and Nigeria.
