Google has launched a new initiative, Build with AI, in partnership with GOMYCODE, to equip 1,000 Nigerian developers with cutting-edge Generative Artificial Intelligence skills.
Announcing the programme on Wednesday, John Kimani, Google’s Head of Developer Ecosystem for Sub-Saharan Africa, said the move aims to boost Nigeria’s participation in the global AI economy by nurturing tech talent capable of creating transformative, locally relevant and globally competitive products.
Kimani noted that the training comes at a critical time, as industries across Nigeria and Africa increasingly turn to technology to address pressing challenges and drive economic growth.
Through access to Google’s AI tools, including Gemini, and a curriculum designed with input from Google experts, participants will gain specialised skills needed to innovate in sectors such as fintech, healthtech, and agritech.
“We are witnessing a technological renaissance in Nigeria, driven by a vibrant developer community eager to solve real-world problems. This collaboration is about empowering them with the tools and expertise to build the future,” Kimani said.
The 11-week programme will be delivered via GOMYCODE’s network of hacker spaces, combining in-person teaching with hands-on, mentored lab sessions to ensure practical application of skills.
GOMYCODE’s Country Director, Babatunde Olaifa, said the partnership would bring world-class training and infrastructure directly to Nigeria’s developer community.
“We are creating an environment where innovation can thrive and are excited to see AI-powered solutions built by Nigerians for Nigeria and the world,” Olaifa said.
