Nigeria has recorded a fresh case of COVID-19, the first significant one since 2022, with the infection confirmed in Cross River State.

The state Ministry of Health says it has begun contact tracing after a Chinese national tested positive.

Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, disclosed this in Calabar, noting the patient arrived Nigeria on 17 March 2026, but showed symptoms on April 10, suggesting local transmission after the incubation period.

He assured residents that measures are in place to contain the spread, with health workers already deployed to communities in Akamkpa Local Government Area where the patient lived and worked.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization, through its state coordinator Yewande Olatunde, urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, warning that the virus has not been fully eradicated and continues to evolve into new strains.
