A cargo ship, CHANG Min, caught fire at Apapa Port, Lagos, on Saturday, shortly after arriving with a load of construction equipment, iron rods, CNG trucks, wooden products, and tyres.

The vessel’s captain skillfully navigated the burning ship to berth at Shed 8, ENL Consortium Terminal, where emergency teams were already mobilized.

Responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Team from Onipanu, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Fire Unit, worked together to extinguish the blaze.

According to a statement by LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the fire broke out in section two of the cargo hold during unloading.

The cause remains under investigation. Emergency teams sealed the compartment to cut off oxygen, then reopened it to tackle the flames directly, ensuring no secondary incidents occurred.

No lives were lost, and all crew members were accounted for, with no injuries reported.

The fire has been fully extinguished, and recovery operations have concluded. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the incident.
