The Federal Government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at improving the welfare and professional growth of staff in Nigeria’s universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Announcing the launch of the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF) on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, said the initiative was introduced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.

According to Alausa, the scheme will benefit both academic and non-academic staff and is designed to enhance financial stability, boost quality of life, and promote career development across tertiary institutions.

Each eligible staff member can access up to N10 million, capped at 33.3% of their gross annual salary. The loan can be used for various purposes, including transportation, medical expenses, and small-scale business ventures such as poultry farming.

To ensure efficient and transparent implementation, the fund will be administered in partnership with the Bank of Industry.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the initiative is part of the Tinubu administration’s broader plan to reposition the education sector.

“TISSF is not just about welfare. It is about empowerment,” he said. “We are ensuring that our education workforce is supported to live well, grow professionally, and continue contributing meaningfully to institutional excellence.”
