Taye Atske Selassie, Ethiopia’s senior diplomat, was chosen president by the country’s two houses of parliament on Monday.
The same day, Taye Atske Selassie took the oath of office. The nation’s outgoing president gave her the Constitution.
Taye takes over as president from the nation’s first elected female leader, who held the mostly ceremonial role because the prime minister holds executive authority. She was elected six years ago.
Congratulating the outgoing FM on his election, the AU Chairperson also “reiterated the continued support of the African Union Commission to Ethiopia’s journey to deepen the country’s democracy and sustainable development.”
Taye is an experienced diplomat who most recently held the position of Permanent Ambassador of Ethiopia to the United Nations in New York.
Zewde, who is being praised for becoming the first female president of Ethiopia in 2018, left her position as the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy to the African Union to become the presidency of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
There were rumors that she and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed were at odds.
